JOHNNY DOH'S STORY
BY CLAIRE ELLIS
Dear old Johhny was a funny kid. He loved a joke and playing games with his friends. But poor old Johnny had buck teeth. It was horrible! He got teased all the time. Life was so unfair for poor Johnny. One day, Johnny decided that he would go up to his parents and ask for braces. They were awfully expensive and uncomfortable and he knew that he would get teased all the time at school because he would be the only one with them, but he knew that it would all be worth it in the end. Besides, it was only for a week or so, right?
So that evening, Johnny bravely approached his parents and started his speech that he had prepared.
"Mum, Dad, I know that you always say that you love me and that I born just as you wanted me to be, perfect, but you see, I'm getting really fed up with having buck teeth. It drives me CRAZY the way that my lip bulges all the time and that I spit when I talk, and do you know how hard it is to get food out of my teeth?Mum, Dad, I love you both very much but I think I'm ready for braces now. I'm 10 so I'm old enough to get them now. Please say yes!"
There was a long silence before his mum finally spoke, "Johnny my dear boy, I love you a lot but are you sure that you want to have the whole headgear and massive wire on your teeth?"
"Mum, I don't really want the whole headgear thing but I'm willing to have it if it will make my teeth straight."
Johnny's Mum let out a sigh, "Ok Johnny, but you won't get any pocket money for a little while because you know hoe expensive braces are these days!"
So off Johnny went to the dentists the next week on the 1st of April 1922 and got his braces on. It was very expensive and they were also very uncomfortable. Poor Johnny got teased even more at school because of the headgear that was attached to brackets that attached to wire that went on his teeth. It was awfully painful too when his parents had to tighten them every week.
The day came when Johnny got to have his braces taken off. It was the 17th August 1923 and Johnny was super excited. He went to the dentists and got his braces off. He felt so happy to look into the mirror at his straight teeth. He talked for hours non stop into the mirror admiring himself and very pleased that he wasn't spitting anymore.
But now thanks to Percy Raymond Begg, there is a newer and better type of braces.
